Herbalife is a public corporation based out of the Cayman Islands, and sells weight management, nutritional supplements, and personal care products thru a network of independent distributors. They have been around since the very early '80's, and most people have heard at least something about them. Their weight loss products are popular, and many know people who have used them in the past. The company does well over a billion dollars in sales every year, and has distributors all around the world.

Herbalife products include inner nutrition as well as outer nutrition, such as skin care products. There does seem to be a high turnover rate inside the distributor force, and with it a lot of unhappy people. It seems everywhere you look there are negative reports about the company and how difficult it is to actually make any money selling the products or developing a network. Mark Hughes, the guy who founded the company in 1980, went on a 4 day drinking binge and died at the age of 44, in 2000. Apparently, the booze didn't react very well with some anti-depressants he was taking… This doesn't go very well with the image of a health and wellness company, and there isn't the cozy feeling of a private company based on morals and family values.

In recent years there have also been lawsuits against the company and the kingpins in its distributor force alleging one thing or another, and there's a lot of dissension in the ranks. Canada recently won a case against Global Online Systems, which is a company utilizing Herbalife's network and products under a new name. Global Online Systems was forced to pay a sum in the pyramid scheme case.

Having said all that, there is some money to be made with Herbalife, but they do operate a traditional network marketing business with weekly meetings, prospecting, cold calls, and the like. With creating a business like this you will be subjected to lots of disappointment and rejection along the way, and it will take some time. There's a very big learning curve involved, and also a lot to teach to new distributors. There is a much better way…
